Gays and Straights and Assholes- Oh my!

March 5, 2008 · 7 Comments

Tiny little rant. Looking for advice and support.

DD came home from school to tell me her friend (let’s call her Tomboy Tina, TT for short) was called into the office and chewed out for “public displays of affection”. DD wasn’t sure but thought maybe she was sent home, possibly suspended.

Me: She does have to follow the same rules as everyone else.

DD: well duh, but no one else follows the rule at all.

Me: what do you mean?

DD: a teacher reported her for PDA because she kissed her girlfriend on the cheek and one quick peck on the lips.

Me: so you think it’s a gay thing?

DD: that’s what I am saying. Straight couples make out all over the halls, they practically do it with their clothes on. It’s disgusting.

Me: you see that stuff alot?

DD: I see that stuff every single day.

Me: so what was TT and her GF doing?

DD: ugh they smooched, once on the lips, real quick. Then TT kissed GF on the cheek as she left for class. They were not making out. They are the least offensive couple at my school.

Me: do the teachers see the hetero kids making out?

DD: if they say they don’t they are lying. It’s everywhere, all the time, really Mom it’s gross. It makes me super uncomfortable.

Me: so what did the principal say to TT.

DD: I guess he said not to do it again, but I am not sure TT went home early and I didnt get the scoop. She did text me to tell me her Mom is going to see him.

Me: Right on. Maybe you were right about starting a GSA, I think it is needed.

DD: That will never happen. The last person who tried to start a GSA was told by the same principal that “GSA’s are for making straight students gay”.

Me: Give me a break. He did not say that.

DD: seriously Mom, I go to Homophobia High.

Me: oh you do not, you have at least 10 known gay/lesbian friends.

DD: yeah and the teachers and principal hate it.

Me: Tell TT to tell her Mom, If she needs any back up on this whole thing, I’m in her corner; and let me think on this GSA thing- I’m not sure I have the strength for a knock-down, drag-out right now but let me see what I can come up with.

Sisters, brothers, friends, what is a mother to do? I could follow in RSG’s footsteps or go in guns blazin’ (this is my gut reaction) but maybe there is another way? Please advise.

Denial is my Middle Name

March 3, 2008 · 2 Comments

“Deny, Deny, Deny”- a very dear friend, many years ago

How I crack myself up. The proud, out, gay woman that I am. I’ve been out since 98. 10 very interesting years. All the time denying that I knew I was a lesbian before that. Bullshit, I knew. I knew in the deep dark corner of my mind. The part that didn’t see daylight until 98 maybe, but I knew. All girls do not adore their female teachers to the point of obnoxiousness. All girls do not fall in love (how innocently it may seem) with their best friend and throw fits every-time she got a boyfriend, or for that matter another friend. All girls do not grow up wanting to be Indiana Jones and not wanting to kiss him. All high-school girls do not set out to punish any boy dumb enough to be attracted to their softball playing selves. And I am pretty sure not all girls let their best friend be Jill, when they were playing Charlie’s Angels, just because she was so damn cute.

Man, I’ve been gay forever.

Lurking and Statistics

March 2, 2008 · 3 Comments

OK so I looking at these blogs over the passed days. My friends RSG, The Urban Henery, Lelo (of course), Selfmade Farmerand a new addition to my blog reading list,  http://hahnathome.wordpress.com/

Some of us get tons of comments, tons of readers (Me being nowhere in their leagues) and some of us get minimal of either. Since I am taking statistics I started wondering what kind of statistics are other people getting.  How could we gather information on such things?

What I can gather is that those with “news events” get some pretty big numbers. But then again so do the artsy fartsy types, and so do personal blogs. Is it the # of posts that brings more readers or the amount of time blogging (in years)? Or is it just the quality of the writing? Or specific topics with large audiences looking for information on the subject? Or # of links on others’ pages?

Personally I do not care if my numbers go up through the roof. I’m happy with what I am doing here, but I do find Blogworld  fascinating.

Any thoughts on the subject?

Which brings me to lurking, what an odd phenomena. I have seen people coming out of the wood-works “de-lurking” for super exciting news, i.e. RSG’s recent nuptials or latest fight to change the world. Or Pat’s unbelievable  story of her win in the fight for her and her wife’s civil rights. Then there is Hahn who writes and has consistent responses to each post.

So why do people lurk? is it

a time issue?

shyness?

no interest in subject matter?

they read this blog as some watch TV?

I just don’t have an answer. Does anyone know where to find blog statistical information? It might make a good project for class ( i need all the help I can get in statistics)

Here’s my info if anyone is interested. I average 30 hits a day, but that includes the first two months when I got like 2 and 4 hits a day. In statistical terms those outliers significantly influence the mean of the # of hits (see I am learning something).

Since January I have averaged something like 70 hits a day with a few outrageous spikes when I mentioned BC (which I am no longer doing by name, because it brought out the weirdos.

And although I do get some very fun and thoughtful comments, I do not get many.  I know I have family and friends reading.  I know they love me, so if they don’t comment there must be some reason. My guess for them is time (delurk already- I know where you live, besides it’s easier than sending a letter or even an email) .

Does anyone have any input on the subject?  I would be interested in your thoughts.

 Updates to my Blogroll-coming soon.

Fleur de Lisa- cool chick

Scribble and Scribe- fun mosaic artist

My SIL- wickedly funny and almost as cool as me. wait that is Myspace, not sure if she is public or private. But you have to read “shit fairy” she kills me. If it doesn’t link I’ll reprint it here after I get her ok.

That’s all I have for you today folks.

Peace out.
