We are a very spoiled family. Even on a budget we all managed to get exactly what we wanted and even more. Granted we have a large family and not everyone adheres to the maximum spending limits. My Dad and Step-mother have no brakes when it comes to Christmas for the kiddos. I told them not to go crazy this Christmas, it wasn’t necessary. They responded with a laptop, router and printer for DD and the Microsoft version of the largest capacity ipod for BB. Both kiddos mouths dropped and they were speechless for quite a while. Grandma and Grandpa out did themselves! The aunts and uncles gave them very thoughtful and welcomed gifts as well. Honey and my brother(#3) exchanged their usual $50 bill which made everyone laugh. They both hate to shop and are quite vocal about it. We arrange that they always get each other’s name in our gift exchange. My sister (#2) gave me a very cute shirt and sweatshirt combo. She knows I have a hard time picking out outfits for myself.
We always get together for Christmas breakfast at my parents’ tavern. X is still invited and he is our chef. He prepared breakfast for everyone while the kids played pool and darts. The adults drank Baileys and coffee and bullshitted until the food was ready. The kiddos snuck Red Bull’s as if anyone cared on Christmas. Grandpa (my Dad) was the host with the most, making sure everyone was having fun. He got out a Wii and hooked it up to a big screen TV for the big kids.
Everyone had a wonderful time except my sister’s fiance who came down with a stomach virus right before breakfast. Poor guy ended up going from the bathroom to the parking lot several times before anyone noticed he was missing. My sister had to take him home early.
After breakfast, which was delicious, we cleaned up and cleared out. Back home we still had presents to open. Honey loved her new dust collection system for her shop and especially her very expensive (if I wasn’t such a good shopper) Hilton pillows. She has been talking about those pillows ever since we stayed at the Hilton in Portland after a Melissa Etheridge concert, two summers ago!
DD got tons of girly stuff and clothes galore. She was very happy.
BB got the 2 new video games and every peice of Halo 3 clothing available. Also very happy kiddo.
I’ll save my gifts for another post because they were too AWESOME to not tell you about in detail. Needless to say I almost cried more than once. VERY HAPPY MAMA!
Both kids were over the moon and thanked us endlessly for the best Christmas ever. We asked if there was anything they could think of that they wanted but didn’t get. They thought that was silly considering the bounty they had received. I coaxed and coaxed and finally they said they would have liked “Rockband” for all of us to play. They said it wasn’t a big deal because they didn’t even think of it before Christmas.
So on December 26th each kid donated the $50 gift cards they had received to the purchase of “Rockband”. Honey and I scrounged every loose dollar in the house and we all went to walmart and purchased the game. Needless to say DD,BB and honey stayed up until 2 am playing the guitar, drums and singing their hearts out. Both kids were up at 8am and started again. Honey is older she can’t keep up with her younger band mates, she is still asleep.
After all my threats about this being the last Christmas in our non-christian household because of all the expense, work, stress and hassle that comes with it, I am glad we celebrated and participated in all the craziness. It is worth it to see Honey and the kiddos having so much fun and hearing them repeat over and over “This is the Best Christmas ever!”
P.S. I am glad it’s over though, I am exhausted!
